Channel 4's Sunday Brunch plunges into darkness as lights 'cut out' just minutes into show

SB: Cyndi Lauper blows out candles on birthday cake

Sunday Brunch cut the lights just minutes into today's episode (June 23) as the set plunged into darkness for a special reason. Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer were back at the helm of the magazine programme.

As always the Channel 4 show featured interviews with celebrities, cooking segments and live music in the studio. Today's guests were Steve Toussaint, Jill Halfpenny, Cyndi Lauper, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Steve Stamp and Allan Mustafa, with live music from the Mary Wallopers.

But just minutes into the show, the lights dimmed as they helped 71-year-old singer, Cyndi, celebrate her birthday. Host Tim said: "It was your birthday yesterday. And it is tradition, in Britain, when it is your birthday that you get..."

Simon finished his sentence for him as he said: "A Colin the Caterpillar cake." Tim continued: "And this is him. Look at this! This is what everyone in Britain dreams of."

A fanfare sound played in the studio as the TV host carried the cake over to the iconic singer. He said: "You don't have to eat it now but Happy Birthday!"

Fellow guest Laurence went to light the three candles that sat atop the cake as Cyndi protested: "Oh no, I don't want to blow on it."

Despite her wishes, the guest still lit the candles anyway as the lights in the studio dimmed out, leaving them lit up by candlelight. But Cyndi said: "Oh but I don't want to blow on it because since Covid everything's changed."

Instead of blowing all over the cake, the singer lifted a single candle and blew it out as the rest of the Channel 4 guests cheered her on. The lights soon came back on as the host of the show joked: "We'll be selling those candles on eBay later!"
