Calls for Gareth Southgate to be sacked as England manager have increased on social media after the dour 1-1 draw with Denmark at Euro 2024. The Three Lions were booed off at full-time in Frankfurt following a flat display.

England have now managed just eight shots on target in their past three matches combined - Euros group games against Denmark and Serbia and the 1-0 friendly loss to Iceland at Wembley.

Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Kane are among the gifted players to have struggled in those matches.

Southgate said after the Denmark draw: “The team didn’t function today - and that’s my responsibility. I’m in control and I have to find solutions.

“The players are giving everything. If anything, they care too much. We can’t make excuses. We have to accept responsibility. We didn’t pass the ball with any intensity and we conceded possession too easily.

“That led to an anxious performance and we have to be better if we want to progress to the latter stages, like everyone is expecting.

“We are disappointed with the performance levels in the first two games and now we’ve got to analyse them in depth and address the issues we have.”

England came into the tournament in Germany as one of the favourites before a ball was kicked. But there are now real doubts that the team can win the country's first major trophy since 1966.

Some have pointed to the fact Ivory Coast changed their manager midway through the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year. Jean-Louis Gasset was axed after a 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea in the groups.

The Elephants narrowly qualified for the knockouts despite that result and under interim boss Emerse Fae dumped out Senegal, Mali and DR Congo before beating Nigeria 2-1 in the final.

Nigeria had beaten Ivory Coast 1-0 in the group stage while Gasset was in charge.
