Rory McIlroy put on notice as Bryson DeChambeau makes ominous nine-word statement

Rory McIlroy has been put on notice by Bryson DeChambeau, who feels as though he is unstoppable at the moment. DeChambeau, 30, denied McIlroy his first major since 2014 at last weekend's US Open.

McIlroy looked set to put a ten-year title drought to bed going into the last five holes of the competition on Sunday. But missed par putts on the 16th and 18th would ultimately be the Northern Irishman's downfal.

The pressure ultimately got the better of McIlroy, who didn't linger around Pinehurst after his disappointment. DeChambeau, meanwhile, kept his cool by slotting home a four foot putt on the 18th after a sleek bunker recovery to take home his second major trophy overall - adding to his US Open title from Winged Foot in 2020.

And while DeChambeau climbed 28 places to 10th in the World Golf Rankings, he believes that his position doesn't truly reflect on how he is crafting his trade at the moment. Earlier this week, the American told Golfmonthly: "So what's funny is in 2018 when I won back-to-back FedExCup Playoff events, I felt like even though the OWGR didn't reflect me being No.1, I felt like I was No.1.

function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.createElement('script');el.setAttribute('src','https://live.primis.tech/live/liveView.php?s=114291&playerApiId=v114291');document.getElementById('ovp-primis').appendChild(el)} window.top.addEventListener('primisPlayerInit',e=>{try{if(e.detail&&e.detail.playerApiId==="v114291"){if(window.document.getElementsByClassName('jwplayer')[0]){e.detail.float('disable')}}}catch(e){}});window.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',()=>{setTimeout(()=>{if(typeof flagTcfLoaded!=='undefined'&&flagTcfLoaded===!0){loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP flagTcfLoaded',new Date())}else{document.addEventListener("tcfLoaded",()=>{loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP tcfLoaded',new Date())})}},1500)})

"I felt like I was playing good enough to where I could win this week," adding: "I could win again and I could win again." Those words signal just how confident DeChambeau feels at the moment and could prove ominous for the likes of McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler ahead of The Open at Troon next month.

He continued: "That was kind of the same thing that I sort of feel right now. I don't feel like the stats reflect purely what it shows exactly.

"But being 10th I think I am, is what it says, is awesome. For only playing a few events, most of them being Majors."

Humble as always, DeChambeau has admitted that it is not for him to decide if he is the best of the world - but he warned rivals that he will continue to "play the best golf" possible. He added: "Am I the best player in the world? It's not for me to decide. I'm just going to go out there and play the best golf I possibly can and try to get that darned ball in the hole quicker than everybody else.

"I'm not going to put a label or title on myself. That's not what I do. I'm here to go play the best golf I can and inspire others and give people some great entertainment."

McIlroy, meanwhile, has decided to take time away from the game after his crushing US Open defeat. Taking to X in the days after the tournament, the 35-year-old admitted that he would reflect on the highs and lows of the tournament before returning at the Genesis Scottish Open next month.

He wrote: "As I reflect on my week, I'll rue a few things over the course of the tournament, mostly the 2 missed putts on 16 and 18 on the final day. But, as I always try to do, I'll look at the positives of the week that far outweigh the negatives. As I said at the start of the tournament, I feel closer to winning my next major championship than I ever have.

"The one word that I could describe my career as is resilient. I've shown my resilience over and over again in the last 17 years and I will again. I'm going to take a few weeks away from the game to process everything and build myself back up for my defense at the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon. See you in Scotland."
