A severe weather warning affecting Scotland supporters has been issued in Cologne ahead of their Euro 2024 match with Switzerland on Wednesday. With giant hail stones and heavy rain expected, organisers of the fan zone in the German city have cancelled all events today (Tuesday).

The Tartan Army embodied the spirit of Euro 2024 by descending on Munich ahead of the tournament's curtain-raiser between Scotland and Germany. Cologne will get the same treatment as waves of fans get themselves revved up for the Switzerland clash.

But any hopes of a party in the fan zone the day before kick-off have been cast aside due to the weather. The organisers' statement read: "Due to an official storm warning from late morning with expected heavy rain, hail and heavy gusts of wind, all events and functions of the Host City Cologne associated with the European Championships have to be cancelled for today.

"The necessary talks with the security partners were already held yesterday evening and the preparatory measures to secure the venues were initiated.

"The decision to cancel all events was made on Tuesday morning after further consultation with the German Weather Service."

Scotland will be desperate to put on a better performance than they managed against tournament hosts Germany last week. Steve Clarke's side went down to 10 men and lost 5-1 at the Allianz Arena, leaving them to fight an uphill battle in Group A.

The Scots will hope that the adverse weather conditions work in their favour on Wednesday - providing the match is permitted to go ahead. The German Weather Service said on their website: "Supercells can form, which are accompanied by severe squalls, sometimes even hurricanes between [55mph and 75mph] and larger hail between 3 and 5 cm.

"Heavy rain with amounts of around 30 l/sqm is also possible locally within a short period of time. Isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out."

Scotland supporters have been in high spirits during their first overseas major tournament appearance in almost 30 years. And they still have at least two more games to enjoy, including Wednesday's, with Hungary their final opponents of the group stages on June 23.

Steve Clarke theorised that he may have overloaded his players with too much information ahead of the Germany thrashing. To put that right, the Scotland boss claims to have sought the advice of several senior stars ahead of the Switzerland game.
