Newcastle star Sean Longstaff is superb at another sport as viral video sparks disbelief

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff is proving himself to be a man of many talents. Rather than jetting off to take in white sand and clear water following the end of the football season, the 26-year-old is devoting himself to another sport instead.

The Magpies star's younger brother, Matty, came through the same academy and made 20 competitive appearances for the Tyneside outfit before moving on last year. Their father, David Longstaff, represented Great Britain in ice hockey and counts former England international footballer Alan Thompson as a cousin.

Despite the various sporting influences, the sight of Newcastle stalwart Sean delivering a poetic fast ball to take a wicket for Tynemouth Cricket Club on Saturday came as something of a surprise to many.

And the batsman left flummoxed by the ball was no fool, but rather the son of former England international cricketer Phil Mustard. Tynemouth play their matches in the North East Premier League - the top level of recreational club cricket competition in the area.

With six wins and nine defeats so far this season, they sit 10th in a table made up of 12 teams. It remains to be seen whether Longstaff's recent availability helps turn the dial in their favour over the coming weeks.

Longstaff plays for the club's first XI, and his wicket - which went viral on social media this weekend - helped his team to an important victory over Benwell Hill Cricket Club.

“Sorry lads, can’t make it to Aus - got to bowl 10 overs up the hill on Saturday”

Brilliant stuff from Sean Longstaff, who is currently taking the new ball for Tynemouth. Love the fact he still plays club ??????

Born in North Shields, the multi-talented sportsman is believed to be a lifelong Newcastle fan. And it's just as well he had something to take his mind off football on Saturday, as the Magpies were powerless to avoid a devastating blow.

Despite finishing seventh in the Premier League to qualify for next season's Europa Conference League, their qualification was revoked when Manchester United beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Longstaff joined Newcastle's academy at the age of nine and enjoyed two separate loan spells, at Kilmarnock and Blackpool, before breaking into the Magpies' first team in 2018/19.

Since then, the Englishman has racked up almost 200 senior appearances. And this season was his best yet, featuring in 35 of Newcastle's 38 Premier League games while scoring six goals and notching two assists from central midfield.
