AR: Expert values creepy doll up to £6,000

Antiques Roadshow fans were treated to a classic episode from Buckfast Abbey in Devon in Sunday's instalment of the BBC show. The episode, which first aired in 2019, saw Fiona Bruce welcome a range of guests hoping to get high valuations for their family heirlooms.

One woman brought along a porcelain doll that was thought to be more than 100 years old. Antique dealer Bunny Campione admired the blue-eyed doll, marvelling that it was "one of the most beautiful dolls" that had ever been brought to the Roadshow.

Sharing her story, the guest explained: “My great-grandfather presented all 14 bells to Buckfast Abbey in memory of my grandmother, who was catholic.

"They bought this doll in France for my grandmother when she was about three or four, so that would be 1800s. She’s been in the family ever since then in this original box.

“None of the family have been allowed to play with her because she is very, very precious. She is supposed to talk but she hasn’t done it in quite some time.”

After examining the doll further, Bunny explained that it was a phonograph doll and estimated that it would have been created in 1890.

The expert lamented that they were unable to play the wind-up doll but was thrilled that the family had held onto all of the original discs.

Sharing her valuation, Bunny said: “With all her original clothes and all these discs, I would say she is probably worth around £6,000.”

The shocked guest was visibly taken aback by the huge valuation, exclaiming: “Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness! Thank you very much.”

Antiques Roadshow has made some lucky Brits a pretty penny over the years.

However, many viewers were stunned by the doll's high value given its "creepy" appearance.

One fan tweeted: "…the most beautiful doll she’s ever seen on the roadshow … if you’re idea of 'beautiful' is 'horrific .. and possibly possessed' #antiquesroadshow.”

Another shared a GIF from the 2006 horror film The Omen and wrote: "I’ll be honest I thought it was gonna say 666 on the back of the head… #antiquesroadshow.”

A third echoed: "Hug me and I will suck out your soul...terrifying #Antiques Roadshow.”

And a fourth wrote: "Creepiest doll this season! #antiquesroadshow... how can it be worth much?”
