BAFTA viewers all say the same thing as Lorraine Kelly awarded special accolade

BAFTAs 2024: Lorraine accepts Special award

ITV's daytime TV queen Lorraine Kelly was presented with a special BAFTA award at Sunday night's (May 12) glitzy ceremony. However, many viewers were disgruntled that she received the gong pointing to the amount of holidays she takes from her eponymous show.

They took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to air their thoughts. @TraylorHolmes referenced her usual stand-in hosts saying: "Surely Christine Lampard and Ranvir Singh deserve a third each of Lorraine Kelly’s award #BAFTATVAwards #BAFTAs."

@thomaslockwood_ had a similar thought, commenting: "Was half-expecting Lorraine to send in Ranvir or Christine to collect her award #BAFTA #BAFTATVAwards." @EloquentParrot sarcastically quipped: "At least Lorraine has turned up for her award, unlike her show #BAFTAs.

@midnight_babyy said: "Lorraine Kelly doesn’t even host her own show now she’s getting an award?! #baftas #bafta." @codiebishopx chimed in "Lorraine Kelly getting an award for her 6 shifts a year, in celebration she’ll only work 5 days instead of 6 this year #BAFTATVAwards #BAFTA." (sic)

However, @Charlie__Tweets was a fan of the veteran presenter. They gushed: "Awww well done Lorraine! Well deserved indeed. She is a national treasure. @BAFTAS #BAFTAS."

The BAFTA Special Award was presented to the presenter by Succession star Brian Cox who described her as "a pal" in his gushing introduction.

BAFTA said she received the acknowledgement for her outstanding contribution to the television industry.

This year marks four decades on air and she has been a hugely significant presence on daytime television for most of that.

Before she took to the stage a montage of her work through the years was shown interspersed with well wishes from celebrities such as Hugh Jackman and Helen Mirren.

Wearing a stunning gold, off-the-shoulder, floor-length gown, she grinned broadly as she accepted the award from the acclaimed actor.

She had the audience in stitches as she claimed one of the highlights of her career was Brian telling her to "eff off" in character. "At least I think it was in character," she quipped.

She also thanked everyone that she has worked with over the past 40 years and described it as an honour.

At the end of her speech, she paid tribute to her husband Stephen and daughter Rosie gushing about the fact she is soon to become a grandmother when Rosie gives birth.

The BAFTA TV Awards are available to watch on the BBC iPlayer.
