Jeremy Clarkson says 'I can't get my head around it' as Gerald Cooper shares cancer update

Clarkson's Farm returns in season three trailer from Prime Video

Clarkson's Farm protagonist Jeremy Clarkson found himself unusually lost for words as he got a health update from Gerald Cooper in episode five of the latest series of the hit Prime Video show. Gerald has been battling prostate cancer, which fans of the show only discovered when the first episodes of the new series landed on May 3.

The famously curmudgeonly star had a good day on the farm when he unexpectedly saw Gerald. Clearly delighted, he gushed: "Hang on – no way. He's back - Gerald’s Back! I cannot believe it," he repeated, giggling away.

Jumping out of the car he warmly greeted his friend and expressed his surprise that he was straight back to work, before telling him he wanted "chapter and verse".

"Because I know obviously you've been poorly, but have you been having chemo?" Jeremy enquired. Gerald took him through his treatment, before Jeremy asked if he had the all clear. "I haven't got the all clear but touch wood," he said knocking on his head, jokingly.

"I can't even get my head around it!" Jeremy exclaimed, before Gerald went into a detailed explanation of his treatment in his own unique style, leading Jeremy to say: "This is the best description of cancer treatments I've ever heard."

Jeremy's fondness for Gerald was evident as he told him: "You've no idea how much we've all missed you. It must be nice to be back."

"It's nice being back to see you - all my friends," Gerald acknowledged smiling.

At the end of the first episode of the new series Jeremy got a phone call while out on his tractor - and was told that his beloved friend Gerald had been diagnosed with cancer at the age of 74.

Jeremy was clearly shocked and concerned, and was heard saying: “I’ve been phoning round, doctors and things I know, and his odds are really good, but it’s scaring him to death.

“I know he doesn’t understand and he’s bewildered, for obvious reasons somebody says ‘sorry it’s cancer’, that’s all he heard. He’s desperately upset and terrified, poor man.”

Fans of the show have come to adore Gerald, who regularly features in Jeremy and sidekick Kaleb Cooper's farm antics.

Jeremy has previously spoken fondly of his bond with Gerald, saying: "It doesn't matter if you can't understand what he's talking about, because he's usually talking about Manchester United."

"He's fantastic. We've known each other for a very long time. He's 72, also never been outside the village, but has worked on this farm for 50 years. He's a great dry stone-waller, which is a dying art.", he told the Mirror.

Clarkson's Farm season 3 is available to watch on Prime Video.
