Escape To The Country viewers share heartache for Jonnie Irwin's family as episode repeats

Escape to the Country: Jonnie Irwin greets keen house hunters

Escape To The Country viewers became emotional during Thursday's (May 9) instalment of the property hunting show when they discovered Jonnie Irwin was the presenter. The popular star tragically died after his battle with cancer in February this year, but he still can be seen on screen in repeats of shows he worked on.

The sight of the late property expert moved viewers, who took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to pay tribute and send their condolences to his wife and three young children. @ScouseLakes simply said: "Aw, Jonnie Irwin. #EscapeToTheCountry."

@dooleypdarts commented: "Watching @Escape_Country on @BBCOneNI it features on of the late @jonnieirwin He was one of my favourite presenters on the Show. Thinking of his family. Rest In Peace Jonnie."

AStevens591 ruminated: "Sad to see @jonnieirwin on #EscapeToTheCountry. Rest in peace brother." @explodingwalrus added: "Johnny Irwin episode today, RIP #escapetothecountry."

@sinisterjag wote: "RIP #escapetothecountry," with a sad face emjoi. Meanwhile, @kellyswann9 also added heart emojis to pay tribute to the star, commenting: "Awww, the lovely Johnny Irwin #escapetothecountry."

The episode saw the late presenter visit Yorkshire, where he helped couple, Nat and Martin, find their dream home.

The couple from Hornchurch in Essex explained that they had been visiting Yorkshire for around 30 years.

"It's our go-to place for a bit of peace and quiet from what has been a hectic thirty years in London," Martin said.

Nat, a police dog handler, and Martin, who also worked for the police, were set to retire and wanted to fulfil their dream of moving to Yorkshire, where the latter has family.

The pair had £500,000 to spend on a semi-detached or detached house with a minimum of three bedrooms, a large garden, and a big garage.

They were also hoping to find somewhere within an hour of the coast, yet, ironically, as the viewings progressed, they mainly favoured properties further inland.

By the end of the show, they had found one that they liked and arranged a second viewing, much to Jonnie's delight.

He also took the opportunity while in the area to showcase the local fish and chips.

Escape To The Country is on BBC One daily at 3pm.
