Coronation Street's Bernie Winter (played by Jane Hazlegrove) has had a difficult time for the past several months, as she comes to terms with the fact her son Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) is dying from MND. The stress would be enough to make anyone act strangely, and spoilers released by ITV reveal that the beleagured grandmother does start behaving out of character.

In episodes set to air next week, she has been lying to daughter Gemma Brown (Dolly-Rose Campbell) about her whereabouts. However, her cover stories aren't as clever as she thinks and Gemma asks Bernie's boyfriend Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) to do some digging.

Given some of Bernie's wild schemes over the years, Dev is expecting one of her standard excuses. Instead, he is confronted by the fact that she has another secret child.

Alongside twins Gemma and Paul, whose full names are Gemini and Apollo, she tells her shopkeeper suitor that she had a third baby. She explains that the boy, named Zodiac (Zac for short), in keeping with her penchant for astrological names, was taken into care.

He was later adopted, and she knows that his name was changed to Christopher Green, and she’s determined to find him. She has compiled a list of men she has found with the same name, and is working her way through it with no joy.

With only one individual left on her list, she is hopeful that she will get lucky. Unfortunately, she discovers he died of cancer. Distraught Bernie hits the bottle, fearing she’s missed the chance to find her long lost son.

Actress Jane, who plays Bernie concedes her search is somewhat futile. "It's a bit of a needle in a haystack," she said.

"I mean, it's sort of typical Bernie, isn't it? Let's just go knock on the door of everyone who's called Christopher Green of around the right age. But it is something she really has to do and nothing is going to stop her now."

Reflecting on why she is undertaking this search after so long, Jane intimates that it is motivated by the return of her ex, Gemma and Paul's father Denny (Danny Cunningham), and Paul's terminal condition

"It was Denny turning up and raking up things from the past and also the fact that Paul is terminally ill, she's counting down the months and it's brought back, so many things that she just doesn't want to think about," the actress confided.

"Denny is the only other person who knows about the child and he has set off the whole cycle again. She knows that he isn't going to be compassionate or sympathetic about it and also there's the potential for him to throw that bomb into the middle of the family and there's no room for any of that at the moment.

"There are interesting times ahead for Bernie," she acknowledges. "If she doesn't find him then she's going to be sad. If she does find him, it could go one of two ways, couldn't it? So she's adding an extra layer to an already difficult time for the family, typical Bernie creating more problems."

Coronation Street is on ITV Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm.
