LIV Golf caddie Nick Pugh was struck on the head by a bottle thrown from the crowd, during the breakaway league's event in Adelaide on Saturday. The incident occurred after Australian golfer Lucas Herbert, who is competing on home turf this week, made a birdie at the par-three 12th hole, known as the 'Watering Hole'.

Following his impressive six-foot tee shot and subsequent birdie, fans celebrated by throwing bottles onto the green, a custom that has gained popularity at The Grange's 12th hole since last year's inaugural event. However, the festivities took an ugly turn when one spectator went too far, hitting Pugh with a bottle, which resulted in him falling while clutching his head.

The jovial atmosphere soured instantly, with Herbert's playing partner Branden Grace giving a disapproving glare towards the area from where the bottle originated. Herbert later relayed to the Sydney Morning Herald that Pugh was fortunately unharmed following the incident, saying: "I was worried about him to begin with, but he's good now.

"He's good and he took it really well. He could have been a lot more upset with it, but he took it really well." He went on: "It's probably difficult to request someone who has had 15 beers to aim a water bottle away from someone. That's maybe asking too much.

"[Playing partner] 'Gracey' [Branden Grace] made a putt from the top tier and some drinks landed on the green. That's good fun, and it's in the right spots so we can deal with it. A few pushed it too far. But the crowd self policed and they got some boos when they were throwing things too close. That's about as crazy as it needs to get."

The Watering Hole grew in fame among golf enthusiasts last April after Chase Koepka achieved a hole-in-one at the 2023 event. Hundreds of beverages showered down onto the tee and green, as Koepka and his playing partner Ian Poulter revelled amidst a beer-filled celebration. This tradition has been extended into 2024, with players entering onto the tee to their chosen song in an attempt to boost the atmosphere in Adelaide.

This week, praise for the crowds at The Grange has been abundant, with thousands of Australians attending the Adelaide-hosted 54-hole event. Unsurprisingly, the most popular player has been former Open champion and Australian native Cam Smith, who has attracted large audiences across his opening two rounds.

Smith, while acknowledging the pressure that comes with such support, praised the crowd on Saturday: "Yeah, I think having support like we have this week is different to what we have 51 other weekends out of the year. It's a very different feeling. I think the support is amazing."

"But there's also a lot of pressure put on you, as well, to perform. I think not only us but probably every other Australian wants us to do well and wants us to win tomorrow. That's a lot of weight on the shoulders as it is, but yeah, we're ready for tomorrow."
