Manchester United must sell to buy to significantly upgrade Erik ten Hag's squad after Financial Fair Play concerns reportedly slashed the club's budget. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are said to be preparing as many as 12 players for a fire sale at Old Trafford, but they may run into all too familiar problems.

It has felt like United have required a busy summer every mediocre year since Sir Alex Ferguson's 26-year era of dominance ended in 2013.

The setting will be no different at the end of Ten Hag's second season, which has showcased a fairly disastrous regression. But this time, the Red Devils have new and improved decision-makers at the helm.

That won't make a substantial difference if there isn't much money to spend, though. And that could be the case unless INEOS can shift players more efficiently than the previous regime.

According to ESPN, United enter the summer with a net spend limit of £100million due to FFP restrictions after splashing over £400m in Ten Hag's first two years.

It means they will be able to spend £100m more than they generate ahead of the first full season of the INEOS era, emphasizing the importance of successfully offloading players.

The report adds that the number of stars being eyed for the shop window is in double figures, with some high-profile names included in the firing line.

Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial's contracts expire in June, and they will free up around £450,000 a week in wages on their way out.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen are all out of contract in 2025, and United will reportedly listen to suitable offers.

Meanwhile, it's claimed that Casemiro, Donny van de Beek, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood are also up for sale and may depart if their valuations are met.

But the most eye-catching name reportedly on United's for-sale list is Marcus Rashford, less than a year after signing a new five-year contract worth £300,000-a-week.

The out-of-form 26-year-old is said to face an uncertain future after scoring just eight goals in 40 appearances and being involved in multiple off-field controversies this season.

However, Rashford's bumper contract and his staggering slump in form is said to have drawn little interest in his services.

Paris Saint-Germain have been strongly linked in recent years, but AC Milan's Rafael Leao is reportedly the Ligue 1 giants' preferred option to replace Real Madrid-bound Kylian Mbappe.

Rashford isn't the only United player on an inflated salary, though, which has proven problematic in shifting dead wood before and is likely to do so again. That's where INEOS' new-look sporting hierarchy, albeit unfinished, comes in.
