Xavi explains Barcelona U-turn: I've told the president I won't do it again

Xavi has explained reversing his resignation decision at Barcelona.

It's been announced Xavi will continue in charge next season.

He said: "I am a big Barcelona fan and I always try to do the best for the club, because I am a club man. Yesterday I noticed great confidence from the board, from the sports area, from the club... And the support from the footballers has been very important, who have made me see that the project cannot end now. And from the fans, who have made me see that we have to continue fighting.

"They have encouraged me on the street and made me reflect. And, above all, I see myself with strength, with capacity. In two or three minutes we understood each other."

Then, he put it together like this: “In January I said that the best thing was to leave and now I think that the best decision is to stay."

Later, during the media question time, he opened up a little more: “As rectifying is wise, I am here to rectify." And he intoned the mea culpa. The decision, he said, had been “wrong".

“In January I thought that, on a psychological, physical and club level, it was the best decision. The team and the club needed a change. I didn't do it because I was a selfish person. Surely the decision was wrong because now I think the opposite.

“I know that the environment will continue to be cruel and unpleasant, but that was not the main reason why I announced that I was leaving."

Xavi, who had attended the press conference with his assistants, Óscar Hernández and Sergio Alegre, made it clear that “the staff is wonderful and will continue. I am very grateful for them having waited for us and listened to us. At no time will there be any retouching of the staff."

Xavi admitted that he was not in any position of strength and has accepted the conditions that the club set for him to continue, without demands for reinforcements.

“I am a man of consensus, of a group. I have very good harmony with Deco and with the president. We are a family within the club and we will try to strengthen ourselves as best as possible to the extent that we can. I have not set any conditions to continue."

The press conference practically ended with an implicit request for forgiveness from the coach.

“Yesterday I told the president that it will not happen again..."
