Viral footage has shown the concerning role that Trent Alexander-Arnold played in Everton’s second goal against Liverpool on Wednesday. The Reds now have little hope of winning the Premier League title in Jurgen Klopp’s final season after a 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park.

Alexander-Arnold was among the Liverpool stars who underperformed in the shock reverse, which was Everton’s first Goodison Park victory over Liverpool in over 13 years. Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the goals for an Everton side who are now all but safe from relegation.

And it was Calvert-Lewin’s second-half header that had fans questioning Alexander-Arnold’s defensive work. The striker leapt highest at a corner to head home Everton’s second goal.

Alexander-Arnold’s job appeared to be to defend the space at the back post. Klopp said afterwards that his players knew exactly where the ball was going to land at the set-piece, giving his players no defence for conceding the goal.

The unmarked Calvert-Lewin charged to the back post to meet the cross, with Alexander-Arnold putting up a meagre challenge for the ball. The right-back barely got off the ground to battle with Calvert-Lewin.

Alexander-Arnold resorted to a minor push on Calvert-Lewin in a desperate attempt to put the striker off his jump. But by that point, the Everton star was already heading the ball into Liverpool’s net.

Klopp felt that his players should have been more aware of Everton’s tendency to cross to the back post, a set-piece theme that has been familiar throughout the Toffees’ campaign. The German said: “I think everybody who is with Everton saw that goal already 20 times or something like that, that’s their routine. Everybody knows they put the ball there.

“In the end, the player is anyway completely free. I didn’t see it back but I’m pretty sure we could have defended that better. It’s 2-0, atmosphere here, we played like we played, obviously it was not the most inspired performance of all time.”

Meanwhile, captain Virgil van Dijk questioned whether his team-mates maximised their efforts to win the league.

The Dutchman told Sky Sports: “Listen, very disappointed in so many ways and I think everyone has to look at themselves in the mirror and look at their own performances and if they really gave everything and do they really want to win the league?”
