Erik ten Hag admitted that Manchester United’s performance was ‘unacceptable’ against Sheffield United despite his side coming from behind to win 4-2. In what proved another unconvincing victory, United trailed 1-0 and then 2-1 before fighting back to take the three points, keeping their hopes of playing European football next season alive.

The result would have done little to ease the pressure on Ten Hag, although the Dutchman cut a resilient figure in the pre-match build-up. And afterwards, he pointed to his side’s character, despite also citing their failure to keep possession at key times.

Keeper Andre Onana gifted a pass to Jayden Bogle as the visitors opened the scoring, and the hosts were also guilty of switching off in the second half as Ben Brereton Diaz made it 2-1. “There were many positives - the resilience to fight back after losing (being behind) two times,” he said.

“But also there were negatives. We gave it away and that can't happen. It's unacceptable, we have to learn from this. But I'm happy with the win and we need to move on.”

On Sunday, United beat Coventry in a penalty shootout to set up an FA Cup final with Man City, but their display was widely criticised after allowing the Championship side to fightback from 3-0 down in the final 20 minutes of normal time. It prompted an angry exchange between the ex-Ajax boss and journalists afterwards, with the 54-year-old taking exception to the manner of the victory being labelled ‘embarrassing’.

Their latest escape was inspired by captain Bruno Fernandes. Harry Maguire a header home before the break from Alejandro Garnacho's cross, but when the Red Devils conceded again, the Portuguese midfielder grabbed the game by the scuff of the neck.

After levelling from the penalty spot, he hammered home from 25 yards to make it 3-2. The midfielder then teed up Rasmus Hojlund to tap home from close range late on as United moved seventh in the Premier League table.

And Ten Hag, whose decision to make the 29-year-old club captain has also been scrutinised, praised the influence of his skipper. “He's in very good form,” he said. “I think when we put him in the right position, he finds the right spots.

“He shows his leadership. But also with his energy, in his transition both ways, it's very important. He tries to encourage the team. He's doing very well and we're very pleased with his performance and with his attitude.”
