Chelsea captain Conor Gallagher has spoken about how his side are ‘really upset’ with their display against Arsenal on Tuesday night. The Blues were thumped 5-0 by the Gunners in a performance which has piled further pressure on Mauricio Pochettino.

After a tricky 10 days, Arsenal returned to the Emirates Stadium with a bang, with Martin Odegaard orchestrating a demolition job of their London rivals. Leandro Trossard, Kai Havertz and Ben White all managed to get their names on the score sheet for the Gunners, with Mikel Arteta’s side running riot in the second half.

The scoreline underlined the gulf in quality between the two teams, and Chelsea were somewhat fortunate that Arsenal took their foot off the gas late on and didn't add to their already-impressive goal difference. Pochettino cut a frustrated figure on the touchline as he watched his side get taken apart, calling for yet further investment over the summer to help him turn the tide at full time.

Gallagher was more apologetic when quizzed on the performance though, saying: “We are really upset and disappointed. It was nowhere near good enough. We just want to say sorry to our fans who came to watch that.

“We can’t make any excuses or blame anything. We just have to look at ourselves as individuals and as a team. We know we can be better than that. We might be tired but that’s still not an excuse.

“We started too slow. There were too many mistakes, it was too lethargic as a collective and we weren’t at it. We have only got ourselves to look at and there is work to be done.”

Cole Palmer has been Chelsea's one saving grace this season (Image: Getty) READ MORE Mikel Arteta and Mauricio Pochettino show true colours after big Arsenal win

There is plenty of change required at Stamford Bridge over the summer and countless issues to be resolved, though the biggest problem for Pochettino is that his side have been carried through the season by Cole Palmer. The summer signing has been excellent since heading to London from Manchester City, scoring 20 and assisting eight in 28 league appearances.

Palmer has asserted himself as one of the brightest talents in Europe as a result, with some calling for the England international to be rewarded for his efforts in the face of adversity with the Player of the Season award. However, Pochettino is frustrated by how his team have solely relied on a 21-year-old.

The ex-Spurs boss called for his squad to show that ‘this is Chelsea Football Club, not Cole Palmer Football Club,’ against Arsenal, though his rallying cry appeared to fall on deaf ears in the away dressing room at the Emirates.
