Liverpool may want to turn their attention to Brentford boss Thomas Frank in their search for Jurgen Klopp’s successor. After Xabi Alonso opted to remain at Bayern Munich and Ruben Amorim reportedly entered talks with West Ham, the Reds are said to have eyed Feyenoord’s Arne Slot - but they may have a better option closer to home in the highly-rated Frank.

Brentford have won admirers for their style during Frank’s tenure. The unconventional Danish head coach possesses many of the traits that have made Klopp so successful during his eight years at Anfield.

Frank’s side were beaten 3-0 by Liverpool last November but drew strong praise from Klopp for their performance. The German admitted that he builds teams to be difficult to beat - and saw that same quality in the visiting Bees.

“Top performance, top result, super difficult opponent," Klopp said after the game. “Whatever happens on the pitch, they will have a set-piece and if they have one, how horrible is that? And then outside of set-pieces, they have really good ideas.

“More than 20 years ago when I started my career [with Mainz 05], I wanted to create a team that nobody wants to play against, and we faced that team today.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold said of Klopp’s tactics: “He doesn’t want us to be the best team in the world, he doesn’t want us to play the best football in the football, but he wants us to be the hardest team to beat, that every team fears thinking that to beat us, they need to do something special and that’s the mentality he’s instilled in us.”

The similarities between Klopp’s style and Frank’s are clear. The latter has built a defensively solid team that thrives in transition and is ultimately prolific with Ivan Toney leading the line.

Frank could therefore be a top candidate for the Liverpool job. Unlike Slot, the 50-year-old boasts three years of Premier League experience and has solidified Brentford’s status as Premier League regulars - an admirable achievement given the club’s resources. He is best placed to be the continuity candidate for Klopp’s sustained pressure on Manchester City despite inferior funds.

Brentford’s high-tempo, energetic pressing style is similar to the one deployed by Klopp. Frank’s development of young players has surely caught the eye of those who will decide in Liverpool’s post-Klopp future.

Tottenham were reported to have considered Frank before Ange Postecoglou’s appointment last summer. It remains a surprise that Spurs are the biggest clubs to have seriously thought about hiring the Brentford manager.

Slot would be an excellent appointment at Liverpool. The Dutchman adopts an attacking style and led his side to a comfortable Eredivisie title last season. But Frank deserves to be in the conversation while he continues to overachieve at Brentford with a similar style.
