Long Awaited Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class Finally Surfaces

First announced in 2019, with several concept iterations teased since -- the official production version of the Mercedes-Benz all-electric G-Class has finally surfaced and is anticipated to spark increased interest in the offroad EV sector.

Dubbed the G 580, this new EQ Technology-powered G-Class combines the vehicle's iconic design with an electrified powertrain, featuring four motors that produce 432 kW or approximately 600 hp and 858 lb-ft of torque. The new model retains the robust, angular silhouette of the traditional G-Class while integrating advanced features and zero emissions, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of luxury off-road vehicles.

As for range, the G 580, with a 116 kWh lithium-ion battery, provides up to 293 miles per charge according to the WLTP standards. Its design incorporates a reinforced ladder frame modified to house the electric drive and maintain the vehicle's renowned durability and off-road prowess.

Mercedes-Benz has equipped the electric G-Class with four individually controlled electric motors that produce a total output of 432 kW. This setup enhances the vehicle's off-road capability and also enables unique features like the G-TURN, which allows the vehicle to turn almost on the spot, in addition to "G-STEERING," which offers a tighter turning circle on challenging terrains.

"With its more than 45-year legacy, the G-Class has consistently embraced the most advanced drive technology available," said Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Chief Technology Officer, adding "The all-new electric model elevates the performance of our off-road icon to unprecedented levels, staying true to its distinctive character."

The electric G-Class also exceeds its predecessors in environmental adaptability, boasting a gradability of 100% on suitable surfaces and a maximum fording depth of 850 millimeters -- 150 millimeters more than its conventionally powered counterparts. Intelligent torque vectoring replicates the function of conventional differential locks, enhancing traction and control.

Visually, the G 580 with EQ Technology stands out with an optional black-panel radiator grille and distinctive features like air curtains and a redesigned hood that improves aerodynamics. The interior features the MBUX infotainment system, ambient lighting and optional luxury elements like temperature-controlled cup holders and the Burmester 3D surround sound system.

The vehicle is set to hit the market with a starting price of €142,621 EUR or approximately $152,715 USD, with a special EDITION ONE model available at launch for just over $200,000 USD -- featuring expanded standard features and exclusive design elements.
