Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has defended Antony following his controversial FA Cup semi-final celebrations on Sunday. The Dutchman has claimed his player was provoked prior to his behaviour after United had scraped through on penalties, cupping his ears and shouting loudly towards the Coventry players.

The 24-year-old was widely condemned for his actions, especially given the Red Devils had contrived to let a 3-0 lead slip in the last 20 minutes of normal time. The most brutal analysis came from Clinton Morrison on Radio 5 Live, who said: "He needs to concentrate on himself because he could be playing the Championship next season."

Pressed on the Brazilian star in his press conference on Monday, Ten Hag said: "He was provoked, that’s why this was a reaction of that, you haven’t seen the provocation, only the reaction. But he should not do it."

An angry Ten Hag also questioned why Harry Maguire's reaction wasn't highlited by reporters, who in contrast to his team-mate, was dignified post-match and headed straight towards the Coventry players to console them. “Did you see the reaction of Harry Maguire?", he asked.

"I have seen Harry Maguire straight after and others, we should acknowledge the performance of Coventry coming to that final and the comeback. We are 70 minutes totally dominating the game by far and 3-0 must have been the game is closed - but the return from their side was very good.”

Antony was introduced has a 66th minute substitute against the Sky Blues, at a time when his team were crusing at 3-0 up. He was ineffective for the remainder, adding to the perception he has failed to justify his £80million price tag since moving from Ajax in the summer of 2022.

Indeed, the winger has scored just twice in 34 club appearances this season, failing to hold down a regular starting place.

Despite the win, the manner of United's overall display at Wembley has only served to pile further pressure on Ten Hag and his much-maligned squad. By the time the Red Devils host Sheffield United on Wednesday night, they could lie eighth in the Premier League table, with their hopes of qualifying for Europe via the top-flight fading.

And a clearly wound-up Ten Hag cut a frustrated figure throughout the press conference. He also labelled journalists a 'disgrace' for their criticism of Man Utd in the aftermath of their semi-final victory over Coventry.
