Exclusive:Copenhagen chief knows why Hjulmand watched by Man Utd

Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Højlund could soon be joined by a third Dane on the books at Manchester United.

Midfielder Morten Hjulmand has been drawing a lot of interest from Old Trafford with his performances for current club Sporting in Lisbon. The midfielder came through the youth system at FC Copenhagen before moving abroad first to Admira Wacker.

It was with Serie A minnows Lecce where he caught the attention of Sporting, with Hjulmand wearing the captain's armband at times with his former Italian club.

If you ask Sune Smith-Nielsen, Director of Development at FC Copenhagen, and Tribalfootball.com did just that, Hjulmand has the credentials to go far.

“We are very proud of Morten," says Smith-Nielsen.

"He is the perfect example of a player who had a difficult period as a teenager. He was really skilled, but didn't really grow in size and also struggled to find out what kind of footballer he was.

"But when he joined our U17s under current first team coach Jacob Neestrup, he exploded."

Just like Rasmus Højlund, Hjulmand chose a move to Austria, with Admira Wacker, to further his career and never managed to turn out for the first team in the Superliga for FC Copenhagen. After 91 games for Lecce in Italia, he joined up with Sporting at the start of the 23/24 season.
