Marcus Rashford’s hopes of being selected to play for England at Euro 2024 this summer have been boosted after UEFA delegates voted for increased squad sizes at the tournament. It was announced on Monday that proposals to allow nations to name 26-man squads as opposed to the traditional 23 had been improved, with the authority now expected to officially sanction the rule change this week.

UEFA had come under pressure from coaches of the leading nations amid concerns about player welfare during the 2023/24 season. The use of VAR, plus the addition of lengthy injury time periods, has been blamed for a host of clubs enduring injury problems with matches now regularly exceeding 100 minutes.

The amount of games and kick-off times for players has also come under scrutiny, with the FA last week controversially opting to scrap FA Cup replays in a bid to cut down on fixtures. That followed Manchester City star Rodri claiming he needed a rest as he joined a string of players to publicly voice concern over the current schedule.

And Manchester United forward Rashford is set to be the main beneficiary of Gareth Southgate now having the luxury to name three additional players. The 26-year old has been subjected to criticism for his performances under Erik ten Hag this season, scoring just eight times in 40 club appearances.

His lack of form has been compounded by off-field controversy, and in January he was dropped by the Dutch boss after pictures emerged of him in a nightclub in Belfast the night before he missed training. It’s led to speculation over his future at Old Trafford, as well as debate over his place in the England squad.

With skipper Harry Kane already a nailed-down certainty to be named by Southgate, and Bukayo Saka all but guaranteed his place, the likes of Cole Palmer, Ollie Watkins, and Dominic Solanke have all come into contention with their goalscoring form this season. Rashford’s tally of seven Premier League goals is also only three more than that of Ivan Toney’s, despite the Brentford striker only being available from January onwards.

But Southgate named six forward players in his last 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. And given his previous loyalty towards Rashford, who has 17 goals from his 60 international caps, he is likely to afford himself the risk of including him irrespective of his concerning form.

The attitude of the player has also been widely questioned, with his apparent lack of effort under Ten Hag highlighted by a series of pundits. And on Monday, talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan argued the player needed to be moved on for the sake of his own career.

“Too many of these players playing for Manchester United don’t realise the responsibility of playing for Manchester United,” he said, following the club’s dramatic FA Cup win over Coventry. “They’ve got it easy, and Marcus Rashford is one of them. I’ve maintained for quite some time that he needs to be moved on, because I think he’s run his race.”
