The Premier League have responded to Nottingham Forest and Mark Clattenburg in the aftermath of the east Midlands club’s clash with Everton on Sunday. Forest were furious after the contest and claimed they were denied three penalties against the Toffees.

Just minutes after the final whistle had blown at Goodison Park, Forest released a statement on X, which read: “Three extremely poor decisions - three penalties not given - which we simply cannot accept. We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn't change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times. NFFC will now consider its options.”

Former Premier League referee Clattenburg, who is now employed by Forest as a consultant, then penned a column in the Daily Mail where he claimed the three “errors” were a “joke” and also insisted the club have had to “endure some egregious refereeing” this season.

And on Monday afternoon, the FA released their own statement. “We have formally requested observations from Nottingham Forest, Nuno Espirito Santo, Neco Williams and Mark Clattenburg as a result of their comments following their Premier League match against Everton on Sunday 21 April. We will provide any further updates in due course,” it read.

After the clash, Forest boss Santo told Sky Sports: “The situation we are in doesn't help. We have some stress and fear but that is not an excuse. It's been clear what has been happening to us, not only in this game. I saw the images, it's hard to take, the players see the images. We did things right in the right moments and we've been disappointed by bad decisions."

And defender Williams added: “Listen, it’s three clear, blatant penalties. Everyone watching that game knew they were all penalties. They are clear.

“Every single week this happens now. We are getting decisions against us. I don’t know why. Is it because we are a lower bottom half of the table team? Because I guarantee all the top six teams are getting every single one of them. I know every single person watching that game today knew all three of them were clear, blatant penalties. It is ridiculous. It is week after week now we are getting these decisions against us.”

The ”Luton fan” Forest were referring to in their statement was Stuart Attwell. And the club clearly took exception to the fact Attwell had been appointed as the VAR for the match.

After assessing the three penalty decisions in his column, Clattenburg added: “It was a hat-trick of howlers from the refereeing team and, unfortunately for Forest, a continuation of an unjust trend that has hampered their survival fight.

“You will have seen the statement released by the club - how the PGMOL were contacted to warn that it was not appropriate for a Luton fan such as Attwell to play such a pivotal role in a massive match that would impact the relegation race.

“Certainly, I would not have risked this situation if I were the head of the referees and all of this could have been avoided had the PGMOL simply made smarter appointments. Referees do not make mistakes deliberately but this was mind-boggling to watch. Why Attwell did not send [referee Anthony] Taylor to his screen, only he will know.”
