Bruno Fernandes insists that Manchester United players are paying no mind to speculation around Erik ten Hag's future. The Dutchman could be axed at the end of the season even if he leads his side to an FA Cup win over Manchester City next month.

United have not kicked on in the way Ten Hag would have hoped during his second season at the helm. They crashed out of the Champions League with a whimper in December and now face a fight to qualify for any form of European competition in 2024/25.

Things almost went from bad to worse during Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Championship side Coventry City, who fought back from 3-0 down to force extra-time and penalties. United won the shootout to set up a blockbuster final against Man City, but many feel as though the damage has now been done thanks to another troubling performance.

With six Premier League games to play and an FA Cup final on the horizon, United skipper Fernandes insists that his team-mates are fully focused on the task at hand, and any big decisions on Ten Hag's future will be taken in the boardroom.

Speaking after the Coventry game, the Portuguese said: "[The rumours] don't have to affect anyone. We have to focus on everything we have [left] this season because we still have chances to get into the European positions in the league.

"We have to finish as high as possible, that's the main thing. Then we have an FA Cup final to play. So no one has to be worried because it's not our job to be worried with these things that come from the outside or from the inside or whatever.

"We have the owners who take care of that, we have the directors and then [for us] players it's about performing on the pitch and giving our best."

Former Ajax manager Ten Hag axed Cristiano Ronaldo, won the Carabao Cup and masterminded a third-place Premier League finish last season - his first at Old Trafford. A high-profile falling out with Jadon Sancho back in September was the start of a troubled second season, however, and the Dutchman's future is now hanging by a thread.

Gareth Southgate is yet to commit his future to England beyond this summer's Euros and United part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly views him as a leading candidate to replace Ten Hag. With seven games of the season remaining, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes there is already no way back for the United boss.

"I think that result today [against Coventry] has just cost a Manchester United manager his job," he told Sky Sports. "I don't see how Erik ten Hag stays. It's just performance after performance. I would imagine that is probably the most embarrassed dressing room of a team that has just won a big game."
