Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag may hope that minority owners INEOS look beyond the Red Devils’ capitulation against Coventry as the Dutchman bids to keep his job beyond the summer. Ten Hag remains at risk of the sack if INEOS decide that an FA Cup final appearance is not enough for him to remain in the Old Trafford hot seat.

United allowed a 3-0 lead slip against Coventry, although won on penalties to book an FA Cup showdown with Manchester City. If Ten Hag does go, he could blame three players for the woeful second-half display against the Championship side.

Casemiro

After such a disappointing second-half performance, United’s players would have been well-advised to show some dignity during the penalty shootout. The message from coaches would have been to pick a spot and be sure of scoring to avoid embarrassment.

Casemiro, United’s first taker, ripped up that plan by bemusingly attempting to take Coventry goalkeeper Brad Collins down a few levels by dinking the ball down the middle. Shot-stoppers consider the shot type humiliating as they dive to one side while the ball is casually chipped down the middle.

Fortunately for Collins, he stayed central and batted Casemiro’s effort away. It came after a poor showing at centre-back for the veteran alongside Harry Maguire, in which he left too much space for Ellis Simms to begin Coventry’s second-half fight back.

Antony

In Antony’s time on the pitch, United squandered a three-goal lead, were lucky to see a fourth Coventry goal ruled out for offside, and just about squeezed through on penalties. Antony had four shots, of which none found the target.

And so quite what the Brazilian winger thought merited his goading of Coventry’s players and fans after Rasmus Hojlund’s shootout-winning penalty remains a mystery. As does Ten Hag’s repeated use of the 24-year-old despite his lack of contribution this season.

Alejandro Garnacho gave way for Antony in the 65th minute and for the third time in recent weeks, United let a lead slip after the Argentine departed the action. Antony’s two goals this season have come in the FA Cup, with none coming in his 25 Premier League appearances.

His £86m arrival from Ajax remains one of the poorest signings in recent Premier League history.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been forced to play on his unusual left side in recent months, owing to United’s defensive injury crisis. But the defender struggled against Coventry and conceded the late penalty which Haji Wright converted.

Just when the Red Devils needed cool heads to see out a 3-2 victory, Wan-Bissaka’s flailing right arm prevented a cross from finding the centre of the penalty area. It was a stonewall spot-kick which could so easily have been avoided.
