Nottingham Forest have sensationally accused VAR official Stuart Attwell of being a Luton fan in an astonishing social media rant following their 2-0 defeat at Everton. Nuno Espirito Santo's outfit saw several penalty appeals turned down and have lambasted the Premier League officiating once again.

Everton defender Ashley Young will perhaps feel fortunate that a spot-kick was not awarded against him after being involved in three incidents that left the travelling supporters at Goodison Park enraged.

The ex-Manchester United man first appeared to kick through Gio Reyna and then blocked Callum Hudson-Odoi's cross with his arm, but Taylor did not point to the spot on either occasion and was not recommended by VAR Attwell to overturn his decisions.

Young was then caught in a second-half controversy as the visitors called for a penalty once again. But Forest, who had surrounded the referee on each occasion, saw their complaints dismissed and later turned to social media to vent their frustrations.

The club said that they "cannot accept" the perceived mistakes made and after the Premier League "tested" their patience "multiple times", have threatened the PGMOL with actions.

"Three extremely poor decisions - three penalties not given - which we simply cannot accept," Forest's official X (formerly known as Twitter) account posted.

"We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn’t change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times. NFFC will now consider its options."

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher felt that Forest should have been awarded a penalty in the first half, when Young blocked Hudson-Odoi's cross, though the VAR explanation claimed that his arm was in a natural position.

"It's a penalty," the Liverpool icon said. "VAR haven't mentioned it, but his arms are out from his body. He's making himself bigger. Ashley Young is very lucky, and I think we'll be hearing from Mark Clattenburg after the game."

Clattenburg, an ex-Premier League official, is Forest's official referee analyst and has already questioned some of the decisions made against the team this season.

The match was also marred by a potentially serious injury to Everton forward Beto, who went down in a clash of heads with Morgan Gibbs-White and needed to be stretchered off the pitch in stoppage time, later taken to hospital.
