Nottingham Forest will be investigated by the FA after launching an explosive rant on social media aimed at VAR official Stuart Attwell. Forest had three penalty claims turned down in their 2-0 defeat away to Everton and claimed that they will "consider options" moving forward.

Forest felt that they should have had three penalties awarded for infringements made by Everton defender Ashley Young, but each time their protests were batted away by referee Anthony Taylor.

Attwell on VAR duty did not recommend to Taylor that any of his decisions should be overturned, enraging Forest enough for them to take to social media to vent their frustrations and accuse the VAR official of being a Luton fan.

Forest sit just one point ahead of Rob Edwards' Luton after failing to pick up any points at Goodison Park, with four games remaining for each team in a relegation scrap that is set to go to the wire.

"Three extremely poor decisions - three penalties not given - which we simply cannot accept," Forest's official X (formerly known as Twitter) account posted.

"We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn’t change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times. NFFC will now consider its options."

The FA have since confirmed to Express Sport that they will launch an investigation into the social media post on grounds of bringing the game's integrity into dispute.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher labelled Forest's statement as "embarrassing" live on TV and warned the club that they may face "real implications" after a reported investigation was launched.

"It tells you where we are with the Premier League now and the clubs, the Liverpool icon said. "Stuart Attwell and Anthony Taylor have had a horrific day today. Awful and they should be rightly criticised for that, and that could have real implications for Forest.

"I get the frustration. But what I have just read there on social media, that is like a fan in a pub. That is embarrassing from Nottingham Forest. I get the frustration.

"That... rubbish about the VAR is a Luton fan, you can't get involved in that and you have to show a little bit of class if you are a football club and I get it, the frustration. The officials have had an awful day, terrible. But you can't get involved in that, that is nonsense."
