Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has accused some of his players of wanting to leave the stadium before the end of their chastening 4-1 defeat against relegation rivals Burnley. Wilder believes his team are all but down after being thrashed at home.

The Blades are bottom of the Premier League on 16 points and will now need a miracle to survive the drop into the Championship. Wilder’s side were terrible against 19th-placed Burnley, who earned just their fifth victory of the campaign.

United, who are 10 points from safety with five games remaining, were 2-0 down at half-time and pulled a goal back through Gustavo Hamer. But two further strikes by Vincent Kompany’s side sealed a horror afternoon for the South Yorkshire side.

Although stopping short of naming names, Wilder accused some of his underperforming stars of wanting to leave their Bramall Lane ground after Burnley scored their fourth goal in the 71st minute.

“When we were under, there were a few players that wanted to get out of the place,” Wilder said. “That can’t be the case.

“I won’t name names, but I think there were a few players out there that wanted to get out of there pretty quickly after the fourth went in, which you can’t have, you just can’t have.

“I can’t accept it. It’s a difficult situation because [of] the lack of players that we’ve got in, you can’t really do anything about it from that point of view but I think there were a few that wanted to get out of there pretty quickly. The division is too powerful for us individually and collectively as a group in the longer term.”

Meanwhile, Burnley’s resurgence might have come too late for their hopes of staying in the Premier League. The Clarets are three points off safety but 17th-placed Everton have a game in hand.

Burnley have now lost only two of their last eight matches. Head coach Vincent Kompany reflected: “Today was a match-winning performance.

"The time they score their goal couldn't be worse and then you are looking to see if nerves will settle. We did what we had to do in the business end of the pitch.

"That is the urgency we have to bring to every game. We can look forward that every game we shouldn't have any fear and to go for it. This league is filled with difficult games. It will always be the toughest challenge.”
