Erling Haaland angrily pushed away a camera that had fixated on Manchester City team-mate Bernardo Silva after Pep Guardiola’s side crashed out of the Champions League. Midfielder Silva had his spot-kick saved during the penalty shootout defeat against Real Madrid.

The Portugal international placed his attempt straight down the middle of the goal, only for Andriy Lunin to remain rooted to his initial position. The Real goalkeeper comfortably caught the strike and went on to deny Mateo Kovacic on a disappointing night for City.

Antonio Rudiger scored the decisive penalty to seal Real’s passage into the Champions League semi-finals after a 4-4 aggregate draw. Footage now shows Haaland protecting Silva from the attention in the aftermath of the shootout.

In a video taken by a fan and shared on social media, Haaland and Silva are two of the last City players to leave the pitch. Waiting for them on the sidelines are a camera crew desperate to get a shot of the devastated Silva.

Haaland blocked the camera's view of Bernardo Silva and gestured to the operator (Image: X)

Haaland gestured to the individual operating the camera before approaching him. The striker, whose goals led City to an epic treble last season, pushed the camera aside to ensure Silva was no longer in view.

Silva was visibly distraught after the game and Haaland wanted to take the attention away from his colleague in a touching gesture.

Guardiola refused to blame the Portugal international over his penalty and pointed out that he played well. He said of the 29-year-old: “Bernardo asked to take it, he’s a reliable player and decided to shoot in that way. What a game he had played. It happens.”

Asked about his side’s performance, in which they struggled to break down a resolute Los Blancos side, the Spaniard added: “I would have preferred to win, but congratulations to Real Madrid, they defended so deep with incredible solidarity, and we did everything.

“I don’t have any regrets about what we have done. Always we try to create more chances and concede less, because we believe that helps you to win and we did everything. We played exceptionally in all departments. Unfortunately, we could not win.”

City cannot repeat their treble success of last year following their elimination. However, they can still complete a domestic double with their hopes of another Premier League title triumph boosted by defeats for Arsenal and Liverpool last season.

They also remain in the FA Cup and will play Chelsea in the semi-final on Saturday.
