Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez escaped a red card due to a little-known rule that means yellow cards do not carry over into penalty shootouts. Lille were left baffled by the Argentine remaining on the pitch when he was shown what was his second yellow card of Villa's Conference League victory over the French side.

Martinez was first booked in the 39th minute with referee Ivan Kruzliak accusing the Villa star of wasting time. The shot-stopper was therefore walking a tightrope for the rest of the game.

So there was plenty of confusion when Kruzliak brandished another yellow card in Martinez’s direction, believing the keeper was trying to wind up the crowd despite already warning him about his showboating after his first penalty save. Martinez, who was getting jeered all night - and at the start of the game almost saw Lille supporters storm the pitch to confront him - put his fingers to his lips after saving the first penalty and then got his second yellow of the night when the ref took umbrage to him making another gesture towards the crowd.

It was assumed that the 31-year-old would need to leave the field and be replaced by an outfield player. However, football’s laws state that yellow cards issued during the match do not carry over into a penalty shootout.

Martinez subsequently remained on the pitch and saved spot-kicks from Nabil Bentaleb and Benjamin Andre to send Villa into the semi-finals.

IFAB’s laws state: “Warnings and cautions (yellow cards) issued during the match are not carried forward into kicks from the penalty mark (penalty shootouts). A player who receives a YC during both the match and the [penalty shootout] is not sent off.”

In a chaotic game in France, Villa allowed their 2-1 first-leg lead to slip and nearly suffered an underwhelming defeat. Goals by Yusuf Yazici and Andre put Lille ahead in the tie.

However, Matty Cash scored in the 87th minute to send the match into extra-time. With the aggregate score still level at 3-3 after 120 minutes, Villa relied on a penalty shootout - and Martinez's heroics - to advance to the final four of the competition.

Martinez, who danced towards the home crowd before sprinting the length of the pitch after winning the tie, remained upset with Kruzliak when he spoke afterwards - and insisted he was only gesturing to the ballboys when he got his second yellow of the night.

He told TNT Sports: "I just got a bad reputation for time-wasting because the other goalie was doing exactly the same thing and I get booked after the 30th minute and we're losing the game so I don't know what the ref wanted from me.

“And then again there was no ball on the penalty spot and I'm asking for a ball to a ballboy and then I get booked. I just don't understand the rules.”
