Alan Shearer has leaked a major change for the BBC’s coverage of England matches at Euro 2024. The ex-England international is expected to be part of the broadcaster’s team on the ground in Germany, as the Three Lions go in search of a first international trophy since 1966.

Shearer is a familiar and much-loved voice for England lovers, with the Newcastle United legend having worked for the BBC as a pundit since 2009. However, ahead of this summer’s European Championships, the 53-year-old has hinted he’ll be adopting an unfamiliar role for the BBC’s coverage.

Speaking on the The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer - who was joined by fellow BBC pundits Gary Lineker and Micah Richards - let slip that he’ll be on co-commentary duty for the tournament instead. When discussing the hardest roles in punditry, Shearer said: “Does that mean I will be getting hammered for doing the co-comms in the England games in the Euros?"

The BBC are expected to announce their presenter and punditry lineup for EURO 2024 in due course, but it would mark a significant change, with Jermaine Jenas having adopted that position alongside lead commentator Guy Mowbray for England’s last tournament in Qatar. But, as far as Shearer is concerned, it’s a job he has done before.

The ex-Blackburn Rovers and Southampton ace appeared on co-comms for broadcaster Amazon earlier this season. It means if Shearer is handed the mic for co-commentary, he will have experience working alongside a lead commentator for major matches.

Express Sport have approached the BBC for comment.

But if things go to plan for England, it could prove an exciting summer for Shearer on commentary duty. Gareth Southgate’s side travel to Germany as one of the favourites for the competition, with England’s tournament set to kick off on 16th June against Serbia.

Following their opener in Gelsenkirchen, Southgate and co. will travel to Frankfurt to face Denmark. England despatched the Danes in the semi-final of Euro 2020, with Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling influential that night.

However, Sterling will likely miss out on a ticket to Germany, with his Chelsea team-mate Cole Palmer tipped to be in the squad instead. Palmer netted his second hat-trick in as many Stamford Bridge games this week, with the ex-Manchester City man’s Premier League haul up to 20 goals for the season. The attacker is expected to be part of Southgate’s squad, despite having only made his England debut in November.
