Ex-Liverpool star Jose Enrique does not believe that Darwin Nunez or Cody Gakpo are good enough to start for his former side. The Spaniard has taken aim at the duo after the Reds’ 1-0 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace over the weekend, in what could be decisive in the title race.

A goal from Eberechi Eze proved decisive at Anfield on Sunday, with Jurgen Klopp’s side struggling to take any of their chances in the second point and ultimately suffering a significant defeat at a crucial stage in the season.

Liverpool were wasteful in front of goal against Palace, prompting conversations about their current No. 9 options. Nunez played the opening 66 minutes against the Eagles before being replaced by Gakpo, though neither truly looked like equalising for the Reds.

Their performances sparked frustration among some supporters, with Enrique being particularly vocal about the shortcomings of his former side over the weekend. Enrique told Grosvenor Sport: "Darwin Nunez is simply not at the required level and he never has been.

“He is a good player, I like him a lot and the fans love him, but he isn't at the level of some of Liverpool's best forwards from the past. He is a good player but he is not a Liverpool number nine.

"He could play for a lot of top teams in Europe, but he is not good enough for those that are challenging for trophies. Their old front three was one of the world's best and now this current team only really has two goalscorers – Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota.

"Cody Gakpo is not a goalscorer and he won't get you 20 goals every season like Sadio Mane and Salah did. Roberto Firmino wasn’t a player to score that many goals, but he gave you so much more outside of that. Darwin Nunez gets a lot of chances but misses them too frequently."

With Klopp leaving at the end of the season, his replacement is expected to make several big changes over the summer – both in terms of tactics and personnel. Ruben Amorim, currently of Sporting, is the likeliest candidate to step into the Anfield dugout over the summer, and the 39-year-old could urge the higher powers on Merseyside to mark his arrival with the signing of a striker.
