Despite battling against an ardous final round, Tiger Woods took a moment to honour a legend before the 2024 Masters tournament ended at Augusta.

Verne Lundquist, the 83 year old CBS broadcaster, was present for his final time calling the Masters at Augusta National, and Woods made it a point to break from his play and acknowledge him while sitting on the 16th hole.

Lundquist is renowned for commentating some of Woods' most memorable professional golfing moments, including Woods' iconic chip shot during the 2005 Masters' 16th hole, which led to him securing his fourth Masters title.

Earlier in the week, Woods had even referenced Lundquist's commentary on that chip shot.

"He has an amazing ability to bring in the audience and describe a situation and be able to narrate it in a way that's poetic," Woods said of Lundquist.

"He just draws the audience in ... that's what I grew up watching, I grew up listening to Verne."

Unfortunately, Woods' performance at the 2024 Masters was far from his past glories.

He finished 16-over-par, had a career-worst Masters round at 5-over, and concluded the tournament tied for 60th place. It's been five years since Woods' last major title, which he won by one stroke at 13-under at the 2019 Masters.

Woods, who will celebrate his 49th birthday in December, has won 15 majors throughout his career, still three short of Jack Nicklaus' record 18.

He pulled out of last year's Masters, which until this weekend at August National, was his most recent major appearance.

The 2024 Masters marked Lundquist's 40th year of covering the event for CBS, and it will be his final broadcast.
