Manchester United have denied that Antony was left out of their matchday squad to face Bournemouth due to him having an issue with being omitted from Erik ten Hag’s starting eleven. The £86million winger has shown glimpses of promise in recent weeks but did not even watch his side’s draw at the Vitality Stadium from the bench.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes came to the rescue of United on Saturday, scoring two equalising goals against Bournemouth – with Dominic Solanke and Justin Kluivert both getting on the score-sheet for Andrea Iraola’s side.

The Red Devils lacked spark and creativity in the final third, with Ten Hag handing Amad Diallo his third Premier League appearance of the season at half-time after a sub-par showing from Alejandro Garnacho.

The substitution highlighted further why United are in the market for another forward this summer and also left many puzzled as to why Antony was not even named on the bench.

The Brazil international impressed against Chelsea last week and made an impact as a late substitute against Liverpool too, meaning it would not have been entirely unwarranted if Antony started on the wing against Bournemouth.

Reports circulated online that the reason behind the ex-Ajax star’s absence from the squad was because there was an issue after he was named on the bench for the clash with the Cherries. But United, via the Manchester Evening News, say such claims are 'completely false'.

Instead the Red Devils insist Antony missed out on the match simply due to injury. He was unable to complete a final training session with his team-mates at Carrington the day before the game.

United are set to face Coventry City next weekend in the FA Cup semi-finals and Ten Hag will hope to have the player back at Wembley. If fully fit, the 24-year-old could be offered the chance to start against the Championship outfit, with questions now being raised as to whether Garnacho will be available.

The Argentina international acted out against Ten Hag on social media on Saturday evening after his half-time substitution, liking – and since unliking – two posts on X which questioned his manager’s decision-making and why he was forced to make way given that he has been one of the best-performing players this season.

Ten Hag has not taken lightly to online antics previously, exiling Jadon Sancho from the club earlier this season, and he may dish out a similar treatment to his No. 17 if an apology and explanation are not provided promptly.
