Jurgen Klopp pulled no punches after Liverpool were hammered 3-0 at home by Atalanta in the Europa League. On what proved a chastening night for the Reds, a disjointed display in both defence and attack was punished by goals from Gianluca Scamaca (2) and Mario Pasalic to leave the Serie A side on the brink of the semi-finals.

Afterwards, the German boss admitted to being surprised at how badly his side performed, admitting with some players it was a case of: "Oops, wow I didn't know he could play like that."

The pre-competition favourites now face a mountain to climb in Italy next week if they are to keep Klopp's hopes of leaving Anfield amid European glory alive. But despite refusing to rule out a second-leg fightback, the 56-year-old himself insisted his only immediate focus was his side's next Premier League game.

“I will watch this game on Monday," he said. "We play Crystal Palace on Sunday. I know already that if we do a couple things better we will be better. Can we win in Bergamo (Atalanta)? Yes. If we play good it’s possible.

"Can we win 3-0? I have no idea but that’s not important right now. We must now recover and it must feel really really bad. That’s important. That was a bad performance. That’s how it is.

“In this moment they are practically though. Then the closer the game (second leg) comes we will realise they are not through. But playing like tonight we don’t have to think about a chance."

Scamacca opened the scoring in the 38th minute after his low drive crept under home keeper Caoimhin Kelleher. But Liverpool had their opportunities as Nunez missed two clear-cut chances, while Harvey Elliott hit the bar.

But an unmarked Scamacca struck again on the hour mark before Mo Salah, who was introduced from the bench, had a goal ruled out for offside. To compound Liverpool's frustration Pasalic swept home a rebound seven minutes from time after Kelleher had denied Ederson.

Pressed on why his side had played so poorly, Klopp cited their tactical play, adding: “I did’t like our discipline in possession. We were everywhere which means then nowhere. No counter press, we played into their hands, we gave them one-on-one situations."
