This Morning: Alison Hammond in encounter with The Apprentice's Phil Turner

Things took a slightly awkward turn during Thursday’s instalment of This Morning. As Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary spoke to the five finalists of BBC’s The Apprentice, the ITV host couldn't help but take a cheeky swipe at one of them.

Addressing Phil Turner, the former Supreme Pie Champion, she asked if he’d brought any food along with him. Laughing, he replied: “No I’m sorry Alison I didn’t, I should’ve. That’s normally my best currency.”

Taking a jibe at his losing streak in the show, she asked: “Have you enjoyed your experience? You’ve had quite a few losses, haven’t you?”. However, the candidate didn’t seem too thrilled that she decided to mention his numerous losses.

He replied: “Did you have to mention that Alison?”. Quickly apologising, the rest of the candidates on the show laughed, realising she’d embarrassed their co-star.

Trying to salvage her question, she continued: “What I was going to say is although you’ve had losses, you’ve climbed back out and you’re still there.” Not taking too much offence, he told the ITV host it was all to do with resilience.

Phil added: “Week in and week out I was getting losses, you know what, I actually really enjoyed the boardroom.

“I think I had about 27 boardrooms in the end, but the cafe, the cafe is really brutal, it’s horrible.”

The cafe in the show is the place where the losing team go to discuss who should be brought back into the boardroom to face Lord Sugar and be at risk of being sent home.

Phil told Alison and Dermot he finds the cafe the worst part as they have to essentially reveal who they thought had performed the worst.

He continued: “But, you know what, the process itself was absolutely fantastic. I’ve met some unbelievable people and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

So far in the competition, BBC viewers have seen Phil lose a total of nine out of 10 tasks.

Highlighting his high amount of losses, Lord Alan Sugar told Phil that he had no other choice but to be the team leader last week and should he find himself in the boardroom again, he’d go home.

However, lucky for the candidate, the challenge at hand seemed to be perfect for him as it was food-related.

Being tasked to create a vegan alternative to cheese, he managed to lead his team to success as Flo Edwards, Paul Midha and Tre Lowe were all saved for another week.

As it was a double elimination, Foluso Falade and Steve Darken found themselves being sent home.

This week, the finalists face interviews with some of Alan Sugar's no-nonsense business associates as they interrogate their business plans and CVs.

The Apprentice continues Thursday on BBC One from 9pm.
