Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino reportedly believes that his team have a mentality issue when they come up against lesser opposition. The Argentine was left furious after his side threw away three points in a 2-2 draw with Sheffield United.

Pressure has mounted on the shoulders of Pochettino throughout this season, and his side’s draw at Bramall Lane provided just another reason why some portions of the Chelsea fanbase have turned on the ex-Tottenham manager.

Noni Madueke appeared to have secured an important win for the Blues in the 66th minute, following first-half goals from Thiago Silva and Jayden Bogle, but the Blues’ defensive frailties, once again, proved costly.

Chelsea failed to clear their lines late on and paid the price, with Oli McBurnie poking home a 93rd-minute equaliser to leave Pochettino’s team stunned. However, the Blues boss may not have been particularly shocked by how his side self-destructed.

According to the Evening Standard, the former PSG manager feels that his team have a ‘mentality issue’ when they are facing lesser opposition due to how they have failed to put relegation-battling teams to the sword on several occasions so far this season, following draws with Brentford, Burnley and now Sheffield United.

Pochettino was not afraid to tell his troops about his beliefs in his post-match dressing down of the team before their trip back to London. The 52-year-old is said to have ‘hit out’ at his team, who appeared ‘shell-shocked’ by the late equaliser following a sub-par showing.

Madueke opened up on the mood in the Chelsea camp after the match, saying: “It was just silent [in the changing room]. It is depressing that we lost [the lead]. Sometimes we drop points when it is in the palm of our hands. We have games like United, where we think, ‘Cool, we can build momentum’, then we have games like today that cancel it. This is our Achilles heel, that next game after a top result. We lack continuity after getting a result.”

Pochettino has often jumped to the defence of his team during poor runs, but even the Argentine was not afraid to point the finger at his players when asked about their display against the Blades. He explained: “For different reasons, we struggle to compete in these types of games. We score, we are better, we are under control, but in a situation like this, we concede from nowhere. It's about being more competitive. We are trying to find solutions but in the end, because of the situation, it's not easy to be solid. We are trying to find solutions on how to be more solid.”
