BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay breaks silence on absence as he's replaced by co-star in shake-up

BBC Breakfast: Jon Kay says 'pull the plug' on Morning Live

BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay has finally broken his silence after being replaced in a presenter shake-up. BBC viewers were left puzzled when the host was noticeably absent during the week, with Ben Thompson stepping in to take over hosting duties alongside weekend presenter Nina Warhurst.

Jon's absence wasn't addressed on air, but he has since taken to Instagram to explain his disappearance. The father-of-three revealed that he had been enjoying a family break for the Easter holidays in Cornwall.

Despite sharing idyllic snaps of him savouring a Cornish pasty on a picturesque beach, it wasn't all relaxation for the family. He informed his 6,976 followers: "Flat tyre. Rained every day.

"As you can see, I fell over in a muddy ditch (and then pretended it was a deliberate April Fool - nobody was fooled) but we had a lovely spring break." His post prompted responses from fans, with one saying: "Kids will dine out on the story of when Dad fell in the mud Nice one."

Another added: "As a Cornish lady I can sympathise! But it's fabulous when sunny! That did make me chuckle though."

Jon has three children with his wife Francesca, whom he prefers to keep away from the media glare. He joined the BBC Breakfast team in 2009 and stepped up as a regular presenter alongside Sally Nugent after Dan Walker's departure in 2022.

Upon his promotion, Jon expressed his delight: "I'm over the moon to become the new regular presenter of BBC Breakfast and I'm looking forward to bringing our brilliant viewers the very latest news each morning alongside my good friend Sally and the rest of the team."

He described the opportunity as a "real privilege," saying, "Sitting on the famous red sofa is a real privilege while covering the stories and issues that matter to our audience home and abroad."

Jon's career at the BBC began in 1993 as a trainee local reporter, and he has since worked at various local radio stations. His first full-time role was at BBC Bristol, where he started on the same day as Susanna Reid.

It was at the Bristol newsroom that Jon met his future wife, Francesca Kasteliz, a former journalist and BBC News correspondent. The couple now have three children, and Francesca has transitioned into a role as a performance coach for presenters, reporters, and spokespeople.

After his stint in Bristol, Jon moved to London to cover politics and general news before taking a year off to travel the world with Francesca. Notably, Jon served as the Olympics correspondent for BBC News during the London 2012 Games and has since become a familiar face on BBC Breakfast.

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
