Arsenal star Kai Havertz making ex-Tottenham star look daft after Brighton win

Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent could be left ruing his previous comments after labelling Arsenal forward Kai Havertz as one of the two worst signings of the season, before the German started on a rich vein of form. Since being used as a central striker Havertz has looked revitalised, scoring once again in the Gunners’ 3-0 win at Brighton.

Havertz got off to a slow start since his £65million summer move from Chelsea and attracted plenty of criticism, including from Bent. But he now leads the line and the finish to double Arsenal’s lead at the AMEX Stadium was Havertz’s ninth Premier League goal of the season, which is more in a single season than he managed in his three years at Stamford Bridge.

And the 24-year-old is making his doubters eat their words, with Bent now left with egg on his face with a previous comment coming back to bite him. When asked for his worst summer transfers in September, Bent was clear that two Chelsea sales came to mind.

“The two that I’ve gone with for the worst deal are Mason Mount and Kai Havertz,” Bent told talkSPORT. “Mount has had no impact whatsoever and that started in pre-season. Havertz is tough because it's one of our (Chelsea's) own, I feel really bad.

JUST IN Mikel Arteta gamble pays off as Arsenal pass Brighton test thanks to three stars

“But the reason why I’d have to say so far he’s the worst deal is because he’s been given opportunities. Mason Mount has been injured, Havertz has been playing every single week. Mikel Arteta is continually putting him in there and the performances have just not been there. So far for £65million, no.”

Havertz is going some way to repaying back Arsenal’s huge outlay now, with another goal and assist against Brighton. He admitted at full-time that he is playing with confidence created by his team-mates, crediting the Gunners’ backline as opposed to taking the plaudits himself.

"Definitely when you feel that you are so strong at the back it helps you a lot,” Havertz told Sky Sports. “I am enjoying myself and I will try to help the team, I hope to keep on going forward.

"We must win our matches and see where that brings us. We are ready for the challenge and we are up for it. Every week we play at the limit and maybe we can play better.

"The attitude and workrate of the boys is phenomenal and everyone put everything into that game - that is why we are successful right now. The boys at the back, what they are doing is outstanding and everyone is involved in that. We try to get the ball high up the pitch, but how they defend the box is incredible.”
