Jamie Carragher has played on Gary Neville's infamous commentary line from Chelsea's Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool to tease Manchester United after crumbling at Stamford Bridge. United conceded twice after 100 minutes to undo an impressive comeback and condemn Erik ten Hag to further sack pressure.

Alejandro Garnacho profited from Moises Caicedo's dreadful backpass before Bruno Fernandes' header ensured Ten Hag's side entered half-time level, having fallen 2-0 behind after 19 minutes.

Conor Gallagher's fourth-minute strike and Cole Palmer's first penalty were things of the past when Antony and Garnacho brilliantly linked up to fire United ahead in the second half.

But for the second successive game, the Red Devils failed to maintain a narrow lead in the dying embers of stoppage time in unbelievable circumstances.

Palmer's second penalty in the 10th minute of eight added on equalised before the 21-year-old completed his hat-trick, taking advantage of United switching off from a corner immediately after.

Carragher joined the outpouring of mockery aimed at the visitors following their astonishing collapse against Chelsea, taking to social media to poke fun at Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville.

Paying homage to the United legend's commentary line as Chelsea lost the Carabao Cup final, he posted on X (formerly Twitter): "The billion-pound bottle jobs [crying laughter emoji]."

Neville made the headlines in February for his reaction to Virgil van Dijk's extra-time winner against the Blues at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino's side had failed to beat Liverpool despite Jurgen Klopp being forced to play extra-time with a handful of inexperienced youth players on the pitch.

Neville delivered the line: "In extra-time, it's been Klopp's kids against the blue, billion-pound bottlejobs!"

It was the second time Ten Hag's side had lost a lead deep into stoppage time in six days, having suffered similar woes on another trip to west London last Saturday.

Mason Mount scored his first United goal to clinch a 1-0 lead against Brentford with 96 minutes on the clock at the Gtech Community Stadium. However, Kristoffer Ajer bagged a deserved leveller in the 99th minute.

United taking just one point from their last two games is remarkable and will ultimately cost Ten Hag in his quest to retain the club's Champions League status next season.

A bad result against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday would jeopardise the Dutchman's prospects of European qualification altogether.

However, the lack of improvement in United's mentality and results this season could be enough to convince INEOS to start fresh in the summer as Sir Jim Ratcliffe bids to restore a winning culture quickly.
