Ex-Chelsea star Joe Cole jokingly called for Rio Ferdinand to be ‘removed’ during his former side’s clash with Manchester United on Thursday night. The Blues legend had the last laugh though, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side coming from behind to secure a sensational 4-3 victory.

Chelsea took the lead after just four minutes against their rivals through Conor Gallagher before Cole Palmer converted from the penalty spot in the 19th minute after Antony brought down Marc Cucurella. The quick-fire goals sent Stamford Bridge into a frenzy, but their celebrations were short-lived after Moises Caicedo’s mistake allowed Alejandro Garnacho to half the deficit.

Bruno Fernandes then levelled the score in the 39th minute to conclude an action-packed first half where both teams’ strengths and weaknesses were clear to see. The Red Devils then appeared to complete their comeback in the 67th minute when Garnacho bagged his brace with a neat header following an exquisite cross from Antony.

The goal sparked wild scenes in the away end, with United appearing to be set to take a big step towards the top four. During the celebrations, TNT Sports asked for Ferdinand’s thoughts on the turnaround and the strength of character shown by his former side.

The ex-Red Devils skipper was understandably full of praise for his former side, prompting Chelsea hero Cole to interject and quip: “Can someone come and get Rio and take him away from me?” The joke sparked laughter in the commentary box, though no one would have been chuckling harder than the former playmaker when the full-time whistle sounded.

The Blues managed to turn the game on its head once again in the dying embers of added time, with Palmer asserting himself as the jewel of Pochettino’s side in style. The England international scored a 101st-minute equalising penalty after Noni Madueke was clipped by Diogo Dalot as he weaved his way into the box.
