Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou teased their first summer transfer after hailing the impact that loanee Timo Werner in the space of just a few months. Werner joined from RB Leipzig in January and the ex-Chelsea forward has been playing for a permanent contract, with his Australian manager impressed with his efforts.

With captain Son Heung-min away on international duty in January and Richarlison struggling with injuries, Werner was tasked with providing further attacking ammunition across the Spurs frontline.

He has played both central and on the left wing, but is still an integral part of the team despite Son and Richarlison returning to action. In the 2-1 comeback win over Luton on Saturday, the German striker's presence forced Issa Kabore to turn the ball into his own net, before the ex-Chelsea man played a key role in setting up his skipper's late winner.

Speaking in his Monday press conference when asked about Werner's future, Postecoglou replied: "In terms of his future, like most players, the decisions will be made at the appropriate time. I think he's been a great signing. He's been a really important part of our structure and I think he can also improve."

Werner left Chelsea in 2022 to return to the Bundesliga, but failed to have the same impact as his first spell at Leipzig. Alerted to his availability, Spurs moved in January to loan the 28-year-old to provide a short-term option.

However, the Guardian claim that an option to buy Werner was also included in the deal between £12million and £17m, which can be taken up before the loan expires.

Postecoglou's high praise of Werner makes for a realistic chance that the option is taken up, as the head coach is determined to build on an encouraging first season after Harry Kane's departure.

"We want to finish the season strong and keep building on the foundation of being a team that hopefully in 12 months' time people are looking at us differently and talking about us differently," he added.

"To do that it can't just be about where you finish and how many points you get, it's got to be more than that. Obviously if we finish strong then we'll finish in a decent position and we'll see where that takes us."
