BBC's Antiques Roadshow, hosted by Fiona Bruce, visited Alexandra Gardens in Cardiff and people brought their treasures to find out what they are worth. During the most recent instalment, one guest was amazed to learn the value of a book they found at a rubbish dump.

Expert Clive Farahar was there to help with valuations and was impressed when a guest showed up with a leather-bound genealogical book from the late 1800s.

The book, which had a hand-painted family tree of the guest's wife's ancestors, was described as "amazing and extraordinary" by Clive.

The guest said: "I first saw this on the internet less than a year ago, and it's all about the Hughes family and their ancestry, which my wife belongs to."

He mentioned that the person who sold it online found it over 35 years ago at a tip in North Wales. Clive was shocked that such a valuable manuscript had been thrown away.

Clive admired the book, saying: "I think [the book is] extraordinary, I mean you've got sort of 200 pages here, crammed full of every relation you could possibly have. And here it is, beautifully bound, there is hardly a mark on it, found in a tip."

He told the guest that the book was "priceless" but could fetch around £1,500 at auction.

With a big grin, the surprised guest simply said: "Really?”

Meanwhile, another individual on the show was taken aback by the estimated price of her specially designed ring and seemed to question the valuation. Joanna Hardy, a fine jewellery expert who has been part of the show since 2007, examined a ring with tanzanite and diamonds.

The owner stated that it had been "purposely made" for her but didn't reveal its original cost. Joanna started by commenting: "Often boxes give me a bit of a clue at what's inside. But I just think the box itself is a work of art. Look at the way it opens. And inside we have this very lovely blue stone. Tell me all about it."

The owner explained: "It's a tanzanite and diamond ring. So it was purposely made for me. It was made to my ring size."

Joanna gave some information about tanzanite, mentioning to the guest that these gems are "very rare" and native to Tanzania. She further said: "I think it's just really, really charming. Tanzanite's mine is very nearly running out. So actually, this stone is not going to be around forever."

After her analysis, she shared: "So I think you've made a very good choice. You've got over a four-carat tanzanite. You've got over a carat of diamonds. [It's] handmade."

When she estimated, she told her: "If you were to have that made today, you'd be looking at around about £9,000."

The owner appeared shocked with the price tag and reacted: "Wow! Really? nine [thousand pound]? "
