David Attenborough show sparks complaints as viewers slam 'brutal' and 'horrific' scenes

Mammals: David Attenborough introduces new show

As David Attenborough's new series Mammals began on Sunday evening, viewers immediately took issue with the "brutal" and "horrific" scenes that were aired. The show's premise delves into the world of leopards, bats and mammals that use night vision to hunt their prey.

The synopsis for the first episode read: "David Attenborough narrates a look into the lives of mammals, exploring how they have adapted to their changing surroundings and have found ways to create homes in the wild.

"The first episode focuses on animals that thrive in the dark, from leopards that use night vision to hunt their prey to bats using echolocation to navigate the night skies." Just minutes into the episode, viewers watched as a leopard stalked its prey and jumped through trees in order to hunt baboons.

As a terrifying chase ensued, the leopard was able to catch one of the baboons, with BBC viewers getting a first-hand look at the dead animal which was dripping blood, thanks to the night vision cameras.

BBC viewers were immediately put off by the graphic scenes and rushed to X, formerly known as Twitter, to air their grievances. One X user said: "Blood pouring out showing on the night vision camera...Brutal. #Mammals."

Another expressed: "Well #mammals started off pretty brutal... Maybe not a good idea with the little one for Easter."

Somebody else penned: "Well that was pretty horrific," while yet another wrote: "This is brutal #mammals."

A fifth BBC viewer said: "Come on David I'm still eating my tea #mammals," and a sixth exclaimed: "Bl**dy hell, #mammals is like watching a horror film..."

However, not all viewers took offence to the brutal nature of what was being captured, as many praised the first episode.

Somebody wrote: "The best things about Sir David & his teams is that they'll always blow my mind about the animal kingdom. A bat that goes fishing at night #mammals."

Another BBC viewer agreed: "Absolutely outstanding again from Sir David Attenborough. The knowledge, the filming, the photography, everything. #Mammals."

Mammals continues on Sunday at 7:00pm on BBC One.
